Hexagonal Coaster

Back - The corduroy was a bit challenging to work with when poking out the corners, but a good thickness to function as a coaster.

This is a hexagonal coaster, made with 7 pieces. I like the simple design that doesn’t require any hand sewing / finishing because it turns out through the middle of the folded pieces. (Ta da!) I also enjoyed playing with the number of pieces (either 4 or 7) and the angles that create different shapes in finished layout. For this project I used scraps of fabric from Blenderz Garment Recyclers, a remnant from Johnson’s Sewing Centre, some leftover fabric from one of my projects in the 90s, part of a decommissioned duvet cover, and some fabric from my grandma’s travels.

Technical notes: This is another of Charlotte Kan’s tutorials called Hexagon Coaster. There’s a link in the show notes for a pdf pattern to print out. I traced this pattern onto a piece of thin cardboard that was easier to work with than the original paper. Before sewing, each piece is 4¾” or 12 cm across, including seam allowances. The finished coaster is 4” across.

New skill: Persevering to nestle these folded pieces together so the finished coaster would be accurate.
