Beanbag Chickens

These chicken friends are such fun to make! 15/10 for enjoyment

I love these beanbag chickens! My favourite part is that they each have a different personality that I discover when I turn them right side out after sewing in their features. I’ve made lots and given them away - and I’ll definitely make more. I’m interested in experimenting with more variations, and perhaps creating other animals with the same general shape as well.

Technical notes: These chickens start with an 11 by 20 cm rectangle and work best with thin cotton fabric rather than anything with more weight or texture. I found a video about how to make these chickens via Maggy Woodley of Red Ted Art. They’re filled stuffing in the head, and rice for weight. Some of these have become aromatherapy chickens with the addition of lavender flowers. It also would be possible to make these without a sewing machine.

New skills: Working with felt and tucking the comb, beak and wattle into the seam allowance, French knots, ladder stitch.
