I tried the technique of sewing right sides together with all three layers included at this stage, leaving one edge open. Then I turned the Tiny Quilt right side out and added the hand-quilting stitches. The last step was sewing up the open side with a ladder stitch. This approach creates a different end result than my usual binding, with no border and rounded corners because the batting adds more bulk when turning them out. Another approach could be to sew the front and back together and add batting that’s cut smaller than the finished dimensions.

This fabric is part of an exciting new batch from Maiwa (Canadian company, located on Granville Island in Vancouver). I chose the “mystery bundle” option with their recycled mending pack. These pieces of fabric measure about 4 ¼ “ in a variety of textures and colours. I’m excited to experiment with these new options, working with fabrics that I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen to buy but really enjoy.

New skills:
Trying out a no-added-binding approach to the quilt’s edges. Choosing the “mystery bundle” and intentionally not having control over the details of which fabrics arrived in the mail. I’m also noticing that my hand-quilting stitches are becoming more even, and also faster. I have very little fabric in warm colours (for no particular reason), and I’m keen to expand my colour options.
