This is my first experiment with improv string-piecing. If was fun to combine various fabrics and then cut up some of the panels and combine them in another way. I didn’t have a plan for this quilt ahead of time, and I found that it wasn’t feeling very unified as I completed the patchwork and before the quilting or finishing happened. I’m glad I stayed with the process, because it felt much more satisfying with the addition of quilting stitches in a contrasting colour and the plain blue background. I’m happy about the choice of orange stitching that brought the composition together. I didn’t use a ruler at all for this piecing, and measured the backing as two inches larger than the size that came together organically. I notice how not using a ruler (much or at all) creates a more alive composition… Even though I can’t describe exactly what’s different, the overall feel is compelling. I also found that this approach of string piecing might be best suited to working a bit bigger. I’ll to keep experimenting with this technique within the Tiny Quilts scale and also keep this in mind when I’m working in a larger scale.

Influenced by improvisation, and an online class with Sherri Lynn Wood about patchwork improv with strips. And also by nudging myself to use yellows and oranges for the first time a Tiny Quilt. I notice that my colour palette (the fabrics I have) are mostly cool colours.

New skills: Improv piecing, not using a ruler.
